The Story

About La Porte

French explorers first passed through the area in 1670, and the Native American trail that opened onto the prairie beyond the forest gave the future city its name — "la porte," French for "the door." Settlement began in July 1832 when Abraham P. Andrew built the first sawmill; La Porte was named the county seat that same year, officially platted in 1833, and incorporated as a city in 1852 with about 5,000 residents.

In the 1850s, resident Sebastian Lay planted maple trees along Indiana and Michigan Avenues, earning La Porte its nickname, "The Maple City." The Advance-Rumely Company, maker of the Oil-Pull tractor engine, became the city's largest employer by 1869. Today La Porte is known as the "City of Lakes," built around Clear Lake, Pine Lake, and Stone Lake within city limits.
