The Story

About Chesterton

French-Canadian fur trader Joseph Bailly settled along the Little Calumet River in 1822, establishing a trading post whose homestead is now preserved within Indiana Dunes National Park. The town itself grew from a settlement called Coffee Creek, founded by the Thomas family in 1834, renamed Calumet in 1850, and platted under that name in 1852 when the Michigan Southern Railroad reached town. It was later renamed Chesterton and incorporated on May 4, 1899.

Chesterton, along with neighboring Burns Harbor and Porter, forms the "Duneland" area along Lake Michigan's southern shore, named for the Indiana Dunes just beyond town. Its historic downtown was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Commercial Historic District in 1999, and the population has grown nearly 40% since 2000.
