About Michigan City

Michigan City's origins trace to 1830, when land speculator Isaac C. Elston purchased 206 lots at the mouth of Trail Creek for $1.25 an acre, sight unseen, and sold them through the Michigan City Land Company. Samuel Miller became the settlement's first permanent resident in 1832, and by 1836 the town had incorporated with 1,500 residents, a post office, a newspaper, a church, and 10 hotels — despite losing its bid to become the LaPorte County seat that same year.

Today Michigan City is the largest city in LaPorte County, sitting directly on Lake Michigan in the Michiana region. Its lakefront location and historic Uptown Arts District draw a steady stream of visitors from Chicago and across Northern Indiana, especially through the summer months.
