About Ogden Dunes

Ogden Dunes takes its name from multi-millionaire Francis A. Ogden, who owned the lakefront land primarily for its sand before his death in 1914. In 1923, developers led by Samuel Reck's Ogden Dunes, Inc. purchased more than 500 acres from the Ogden estate to create a highly restricted residential and summer-retreat community, incorporated by the Porter County Commissioners on August 18, 1925.

The town's earliest identity was as an art colony — promotional efforts drew artists, intellectuals, and nature enthusiasts, and informal exhibitions in local homes and studios grew into traditions like the annual Woman's Club Arts and Crafts Fair, which continues today. After World War II, Ogden Dunes became a moderately priced, full-time suburb for young families, and many of its residents later played a central role in the Save the Dunes preservation movement that helped establish what is now Indiana Dunes National Park.
