The Story
Dyer was settled in 1838 and officially incorporated as a town on January 24, 1910. Part of St. John Township in Lake County, the town has adopted the motto "Striving Higher in Dyer" and is bordered by Munster to the north and Schererville to the east, sitting directly along the Illinois state line to the west.
Dyer holds a distinctive piece of highway history: a 1.5-mile stretch of U.S. 30 through town, known as the Lincoln Highway's "Ideal Section," was completed in 1923 as a prototype for modern road construction — complete with a 100-foot right-of-way, reinforced concrete, underground drainage, and lighting. The Henry C. Ostermann Memorial Bench and Ideal Section Monument, dating to 1921, still mark the spot along US 30 today.
Real Estate
Dyer promotes what the town calls "life-cycle housing" — a range of home types and price points that let residents move up without moving out of town. Buyers are typically drawn by the well-regarded Lake Central school system, steady investment in the town's parks, and a growing lineup of local restaurants and retail.
Home values shift block by block. The team builds every comparative market analysis using a verified methodology — a 1-mile radius, comparable square footage within 20%, matching bed and bath count, and similar age, garage, and basement — so Dyer buyers and sellers get a number they can trust, not a computer-generated estimate.
