The Story
St. John traces its founding to 1837, when German immigrant John Hack settled the area then known as "Prairie West." The community soon took its name from St. John the Evangelist parish, founded in 1839 as the first Catholic church in Lake County, and officially became a town in 1911.
What started as a small farming settlement has become one of the fastest-growing communities in Northwest Indiana — the population has grown nearly 190% since 2000, passing 24,000 residents, as new subdivisions have filled in the farmland along the U.S. 41 corridor just minutes from the Illinois state line.
Real Estate
St. John's housing stock is largely newer construction and single-family subdivisions built over the past two decades, reflecting the town's rapid growth. Buyers are typically drawn by top-rated schools, newer inventory, and a still-spacious, lower-density feel compared to towns closer to the Illinois state line.
Home values shift block by block. The team builds every comparative market analysis using a verified methodology — a 1-mile radius, comparable square footage within 20%, matching bed and bath count, and similar age, garage, and basement — so St. John buyers and sellers get a number they can trust, not a computer-generated estimate. Education
St. John is served by the Lake Central School Corporation, established in 1967 and enrolling over 9,600 students across St. John, Dyer, most of Schererville, and parts of Crown Point and Griffith.
Outdoors
The St. John Parks & Recreation Department maintains more than 25 neighborhood and regional parks throughout the town, offering programs and events for residents year-round.

St. John's best-known landmark draws visitors from across the Chicago area.
