The Story

About Crown Point

Solon Robinson and his family became the first settlers of what would become Crown Point on October 31, 1834. The city has served as the county seat of Lake County since the 1840s, earning it the nickname "Hub of Lake County," and was incorporated as a town in 1868 and as a city in 1911.

The historic Lake County Courthouse and surrounding town square, along with the city's many Victorian-era homes, remain the visual and civic center of Crown Point. Between 1915 and 1940, the courthouse was a popular elopement destination for Chicago-area couples, since Indiana required no waiting period for a marriage license at the time.
