About New Lenox

The area now known as New Lenox was first settled in the late 1820s near Gougar Crossing (Route 30 and Gougar Road) as a community called Van Horne Point. New Lenox Township formed in 1850, and when the Chicago & Rock Island Railroad reached the settlement in the 1850s, the rail stop was originally named "Tracy" after the line's general superintendent. At his own request, it was renamed New Lenox after the township, itself named for Lenox, New York. The village wasn't officially incorporated until October 4, 1946.
