The area now known as Homer Glen was formerly called Goodings Grove, part of Homer Township, which was established in 1836. The village of Homer Glen itself wasn't incorporated until April 17, 2001, making it one of the newest municipalities in the Chicago area.

In 2002, Homer Glen was one of 16 Illinois communities awarded a Green Communities Demonstration Grant, launching the village's Green Vision Program — a deliberate effort to preserve open space alongside new residential and commercial growth.
